This is a John Crichton Copper and Tile Mosaic Bowl, circa 1950s.
John Crichton was born in Bombay in 1917 and moved to England as a child. He studied at Birmingham College of Art and served as an official war photographer during WW11.
He moved to NZ and established John Crichton Ltd in 1951 offering interior design services. He designed and sold furniture, lighting and ceramics and was an artist working in mosaics, pen, ink and watercolour. He was able to promote his designs beyond NZ feasting chairs and lamps in the British journal Decorative Art.
Crichton died in NZ on 7 Jan 1993 and examples of his work are held in the collections of Te Papa.
