About Crown Lynn
Crown Lynn, a cornerstone of New Zealand’s ceramic heritage, operated from 1854 to 1989. The company began with Rice Owen Clark, who produced clay pipes in Hobsonville, Auckland, during the mid-19th century. By 1929, it had expanded through a merger to form the Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company.
The 1930s–1950s were pivotal decades that solidified Crown Lynn’s reputation for combining functionality with artistry. The company's adaptability during these years laid the foundation for its later successes and enduring place in New Zealand’s cultural heritage.
During the post-war years, Crown Lynn embraced a wide variety of designs, collaborating with talented artists and designers. By the 1960s, it had grown to become the largest pottery manufacturer in the Southern Hemisphere, producing millions of items annually for both domestic and international markets.
Although Crown Lynn ceased operations in 1989, its legacy lives on through its celebrated designs, recognised as quintessential examples of New Zealand’s mid-20th-century industrial and cultural artistry. Today, Crown Lynn pottery is treasured by collectors for its unique combination of utility and aesthetic appeal.
