Antique Sterling Silver Snuff Box with Singha Lion Motif
This Antique Silver snuff box is beautifully crafted in sterling silver with a Lion motif on the lid, which we attribute to as being Sri Lankan.
The Sri Lankan lion symbol, featured on the national flag and emblem, represents bravery, sovereignty, and the Sinhalese heritage. The golden lion passant holds a sword in its right forepaw, symbolizing the nation's independence, while its curly hair indicates religious wisdom and meditation.
There is an intricate design on the circumference of the snuff box. We are unable to confirm if this snuff box is from Sri Lanka, but we attribute it to Sri Lankan silver and design.
Antique Sri Lankan (Ceylon) silver snuff boxes, particularly from the 1890–1910 Kandy period, are highly detailed, often featuring repoussé work depicting elephants, lions, and floral motifs.
These, or similar South Indian examples, frequently include intricate jungle scenes and are sometimes unmarked, relying on patina and traditional craftsmanship for authentication
The lid opens and closes well. It is in great condition.
Inside the snuff box, it is inscribed with SS for sterling silver and the number 154 or possibly 54.
